Assistant Controller

Location: St. Paul, MN (H.B. Fuller Corporate Headquarters)

The Assistant Controller reports to H.B. Fuller’s Vice President, Corporate Controller and has direct responsibility for the Company’s overall accounting, internal control, and financial reporting activities. The design, implementation, and execution of these activities by corporate, operating segment and regional finance personnel are the responsibility of this position. As such, the Assistant Controller will be required to work with corporate, operating segment and regional finance personnel to ensure compliance with these policies, as well as develop and/or approve solutions to new issues or concerns. Therefore, the Assistant Controller must command the respect of the members of the Finance Leadership Team and the broader senior management team.

The role will have leadership responsibilities to manage a global team.

The position is located at the Company’s headquarters in Vadnais Heights, Minnesota.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Management of the Company’s financial reporting process including the preparation of its a) consolidated financial statements and related SEC filings that are prepared in accordance with US GAAP and in compliance with SEC requirements, b) individual legal entity statutory financial statements prepared and filed in accordance with the applicable statutory requirements and c) individual benefit plan audits.
  • Management of the Company’s accounting policies and related compliance self-assessment process. This includes monitoring new accounting pronouncements and the implementation of new or modification of existing accounting policies as well as reporting to the Audit Committee of the Board on the implications of such pronouncements on H.B. Fuller. This also includes overseeing the development and execution of sessions to train the Company’s financial and non-financial personnel on such changes.
  • Management of a liaison process for corporate technical accounting personnel to research, analyze and design transactions and prepare the applicable position papers for complex business transactions contemplated by corporate or operating segment personnel. This process will ensure operating segment personnel are properly implementing the Company’s accounting policies and internal control activities.
  • Overseeing the company monthly and quarterly close process, working closely with the Record-to-Report, Costing and Financial Planning and Analysis teams.
  • Participating in the acquisition financial due diligence including overseeing any work done by third party providers.
  • Leading the efforts around accounting for acquisitions, including opening balance sheet procedures, tangible and intangible asset valuation, accounting for contingent consideration arrangements and preparation of required financial reporting and SEC filing documents (such as Form 8-K).
  • As a member of the Sustainability Committee, the Assistant Controller position is accountable for working closely with the Committee to ensure that the company effectively reports and discloses its climate-related activities, meeting the expectations of stakeholders and regulatory requirements.
  • Partnering with cross-functional teams including internal audit, inventory costing and global finance services to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of accounting and internal control processes.
  • Management of the external audit relationship for the overall Company and execution of the external audit and quarterly review activities. These processes include the review of PBC (Prepared by Client) information, coordination of the quarterly review and audit schedules and discussions with senior audit management on interpretation of complex accounting issues.
  • Management of the Company’s internal controls over financial reporting in compliance with section 404 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002. This process includes the design, implementation and execution of internal controls including automated system and manual controls. This process also includes overseeing the development and training of financial and non-financial personnel across the globe that execute these controls on a routine basis.
  • Management of third-party resources engaged to assist with SOX implementation and control testing.
  • Management of the Company’s internal control management self-assessment process including the design, execution, and evaluation of the effectiveness of internal controls. This also includes the assessment of the significance of control deficiencies and the management of action plans to remediate identified deficiencies.
  • Leadership responsibilities overseeing eight corporate reporting professionals (direct and indirect).

Minimum Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in accounting
  • CPA certification
  • At least 11 years of relevant work experience, including at least 6 years of experience in public accounting serving publicly traded, multi-national companies, preferably in the manufacturing sector.
  • At least 10 years of experience directly managing a team of employees.
  • Excellent knowledge of U.S. GAAP, including ability to research accounting literature, establish a position and develop procedures for implementation.
  • Ability to interpret complex technical guidance and effectively present the Company’s accounting position both in written and verbal form.
  • Strong business acumen and ability to collaborate with financial and non-financial personnel to achieve the Company’s business objectives.
  • Excellent knowledge of Sarbanes-Oxley requirements, the COSO 2013 framework and the design and management of integrated internal control processes
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software applications
  • Fluent speaking in English
  • Travel Required: 10- 15% estimated, domestic and international

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, and geographic location.

The salary for this role is $175,000 - 225,000.
