Senior IT Database Administrator

The Senior IT DBA reports to the Enterprise Architect Manager and has primary responsibility in the SQL DB and Azure DB maintenance and support. The IT DBA’s lead role is to ensure that database objects, program data access, procedures, and facilities are used properly.  This lead role is responsible for database architecture and design.  Position is also responsible for ongoing maintenance of enterprise server database systems and system management products. 


This individual will be involved in a variety of technical activities centered on the organization’s core systems. The primary customer base served includes internal business users.  Areas of focus include: 

  • Expert understanding of data backup and recovery methodology, performance optimization and tuning, security and integrity, database migration, managing database connections, documentation, coding, and design
  • Troubleshooting end-to-end performance related issues including application code, database performance, OS / Server performance, along with network and storage related issues
  • Highly communicative (both verbal and written), with the ability to work both with others and independently
  • Builds and maintains corporate production and test database environments
  • Experience with third-party tools, DBA case tools (both front and backend), and strong knowledge of schema and data concepts and standards
  • Creates storage groups, databases, tables and views, reviews SQL, develops and enforces database standards
  • Serves as the corporate subject matter expert in the MS SQL and Azure Datacenter spaces
  • Conduct advanced levels of DB design and architecture capabilities to support applications and interfaces
  • Perform Database Backup, Recovery, and Monitoring using RMAN tools
  • Ensures work is thoroughly tested and smoothly implemented and promoted to production
  • Deciding whether clustering, log shipping, mirroring, replication, etc. are the right fit to solve a business problem
  • Maintain our databases including installing upgrades, protecting against threats, managing storage and security, various implementations, and other associated duties
  • Analyzes and recommends upgrades and/or new acquisitions of hardware to support new systems or growth
  • Implement, tune and upgrade DBMS installations while assisting with code review and schema design
  • Maintain and document audit trails, report on usage and performance, testing upgrades and sharing statistical information
  • Stay current with industry best practices and make recommendations on server improvements when needed
  • Exceptional organizational skills, with the ability to multitask and still maintain a precise attention to details
  • Familiarity with managing SQL in Azure and able to provide guidance as needed
  • Experience working with Windows server and Active Directory

  • On-call troubleshooting with SQL server problems and outage
  • Leads troubleshooting application problems where database management is an integral element
  • Collaborates with developers (internal and/or external) to develop and test new or modified systems 
  • Periodically reviews system to ensure client needs are met; identifies possible modifications as required 
  • Well versed in T-SQL, PowerShell
  • Prepare documentation for the systems in accordance with department and corporate standards
  • Prepare and submit project status and/or other reports to the Project Manager as required
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with users
  • Proactively identifies opportunities and gains buy-in from senior leadership to create projects or initiatives
  • Develop business acumen within a particular functional area of the business
  • Challenge business partners with alternate solutions
  • Coaches and mentors others
  • Independently prioritize project tasks and workload
  • Keep abreast of new developments in software, database development, and be informed of the latest techniques, technologies, and practices

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors in BA, CS, or MIS
  • 10 or more years of related IT experience
  • Expert in MS SQL DB, Azure DB
  • Knowledge in ITIL and TOGAF

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced skills in Oracle DB, Oracle Server, UNIX, Linus, Cloud data warehouse
  • Certification as MCSD or MCDBA for .NET not required, but a definite bonus
